Established in the year 2006, Karni Packaging started their activities as a pouch manufacturing company. The company later ventured into trading of laminates. Once established, they took over a sick unit through bank and started manufacturing their own flexible packaging. On regular interval they kept adding their capacity and upgrading their machines from time to time, today their installed capacity stands at 800 metric tons per month.

Recently, company has bought ULTRASLIT® OHP from SP Ultraflex, Mumbai. We interviewed Mr.Mohit Kakani of Karni Packaging about their recent installation.

Elaborating on their decision of investing in ULTRASLIT®OHP Mohit says, “When it comes to capital investment like machinery, we have always sought perfection and endeavoured to have only the best machines on our floor. In keeping with this philosophy, we installed a high-speed slitter rewinder from SP Ultraflex, convinced that the superior quality of our finished reels would give us an edge over the competition. We had heard very good reviews about SP Ultraflex and are happy to see that after having experienced their technology first hand, it is now our turn to give a good review today.”

With so many lower priced options, Karni Packaging has still opted for SP Ultraflex ULTRASLIT®OHP, explaining the factors that drove this decision, Mohit adds, “At Karni Packaging, we believe that hygiene is non-negotiable, especially when you cater to the food and pharma industry. Unlike machines with other layouts, the overhead path of the ULTRASLIT® OHP effectively isolates the passing substrate from the dust in the environment which would otherwise contaminate the substrate due to its attraction by the static charge on its surface. It had been our plan to opt for this model even before the pandemic, and now, with the new found concern about hygiene post COVID, our decision has proved to be all the more correct.”

In the production facility, Karni Packaging have two multi-layer blown film lines from Kabra- one with an IBC & the other with an OBC. They possess an eight color printing machine from U- Flex and another from Sneha Flex will soon be commissioned. Two Solventless Laminators- one from U-Flex and the other from Nordmeccanica, Italy is running in their production area. The slitter rewinders and pouch making machines are also sourced from reputed manufacturers.

Talking about the competition, he says, “Hyderabad has become a highly competitive hub for the converting industry. Apart from corporate brand owners, a major part of our produce is supplied to retail customers. In fact, we take special care that this category of customers gets our best attention, bearing in mind that they bring in business all year round, insulating us from seasonal swings in demand to a large extent. I would say it is this strategy that has served to give us an edge over the competition.”

The outlook for the Flexible Packaging Industry post COVID- 19 has changed drastically, anticipating  this transformation, Mohit adds, “We have diligently followed all the precautions and guidelines mandated by the central government after resuming our operations post lockdown. Covid-19 has been a game changer for the converting industry, bringing in huge volumes of orders in the face of panic buying by food retailers. We see this trend to continue for the foreseeable future, with people now preferring to buy food and beverages which were earlier sold loose (or at best in bulk packaging), in individual packages.”

“We have plans for a new blown film line. Post that, we will expand our infrastructure of pouching machines. Thereafter, we will venture into a new line of business. This is our roadmap till 2025.” Concludes Mohit.
