With over 2000 installations worldwide, OMET is one of the most reliable equipment manufacturers in the world. Established in 1963 in Italy, OMET has been designing and manufacturing printing and converting machines for the narrow web industry. Besides flexo printing, OMET introduced different interchangeable printing technologies such as silkscreen, cold foil, hot foil, holograms, and rotogravure. In India, OMET began its operations in 2010-2011. The company participated in the recently concluded PAMEX 2023, where we spoke to Pawandeep Sahni, Managing Director for OMET India Pvt. Ltd.
Sahni said, “We have over 35 installations of OMET flexo presses in India, including the recent installations at SelJagat, Ziricon, Any Graphics, and Hutamaki. We are engaged in some excellent projects with industry market leaders in all packaging areas, like labels, cartons, and flexible packaging.’
‘Omet is a market leader for combination printing, so with one press, we can do all processes like Flexo, Offset, Gravure, Digital, etc. We have multiple combination printing presses installed in India. Recently, a combination printing press was installed at Palghar. Nowadays, most of the machines coming in India are combination printing presses.’
Talking about the domestic market, he added, ‘We are excited with the Indian market as the consumers in India are demanding all kinds of applications. The Indian market is getting very competitive, so one needs to understand how to make and sustain profit, and if the converter has that clarity, then growth is inevitable.’
Sustainability is not an option anymore
‘There is growing awareness about sustainability, and now a mandate is also coming from the government. Therefore in the next 3 to 5 yrs, there will be no packaging without a sustainability factor.’
Why the Need for Hybrid Printing
‘The IT and the printing industry is now coming together. So we can see a lot of exciting innovations. People can witness some avatar of packaging in the next 24-48 months. It will not just be about labels and packaging but much more like printed electronics, printed batteries, printed solar cells, etc. There will be a dearth of opportunities one can do with printing; for that, we need hybrid printing.’
‘Simple printing days are gone, so if you want to make substantial growth and profit, you have to do value addition in your labels and packaging, and you will require a combination press, a hybrid press, that can do multiple processes instead of just printing, foiling, and die-cutting. OMET has partnered with Drust, which manufactures digital Label printing presses. We manufacture hybrid presses in association with Drust.’
