Keeping in mind the growth opportunity and need for innovation in India`s Flexible packaging market. Michelman inaugurated its state-of-the-art Innovation Centre in Mumbai on 31 January 2018. The opening of the Michelman`s Innovation Centre for coatings (MICC) was marked by the presence of Steven J Shifman, President and CEO Michelman and Edgard D Kagan, US consul general in the bustling city of Andheri.
Shifman stated, “The Indian Government is interested in taking waste out of the packaging, promoting less toxic materials and encouraging environmentally friendly materials and that's what Michelmann is all about. Thus, India is a very important place for us to be.”
The facility includes complete formulation ingredients, materials and application labs as well as dual station coater-laminator from Kroenert dual coater - laminator. During a live demonstration, it was clear that equipment can be deployed for various adhesive application and multiple print operations. The equipment has the ability to coat a wide range of substrates up to 400 microns thickness; UV top and heat nip lamination capability.
The high-end equipment like WVTR(Water vapor Transmission Rate) and OTR(Oxygen Transmission Rate) testing machines and Gelbo Tester put MICC in a strategic position to work closely with flexible packaging convertors brand owners and film manufacturers to develop innovative laminate structures for specific needs. Industry users can also run trials and test operation of the packaging under one ceiling floor.
The use of the innovation Centre by film manufacturers and packaging converters to come up with new coated films and laminates will be free of charge. "Additionally, Indian Government has certain plans to implement compliances. That's where our innovation center comes into the picture. Here brand owners and convertors can prototype different packaging structures and choose the most optimized one for their requirements. Plus Michelman has a global capability in the regulatory and environmental rules that can be leveraged here,” said, Shailesh Nerma, Country manager for Michelman's India operations.
